Rotaxane Co <sup>II</sup> Complexes as Field‐Induced Single‐Ion Magnets

Mechanically chelating ligands have untapped potential for the engineering of metal ion properties. Here we demonstrate this principle in context CoII-based single-ion magnets. Using multi-frequency EPR, susceptibility and magnetization measurements found that these complexes show some highest zero field splittings reported five-coordinate CoII to date. The predictable coordination behaviour interlocked allowed magnetic properties their be evaluated computationally a priori our combined experimental theoretical approach enabled us rationalize observed trends. rotaxane demonstrates offer new strategy design with interesting functionality.

Complexes of a [2]rotaxane ligand with terminal terpyridine groups.

Permanently interlocked [2]rotaxane ligands can be created by capping a pyridine terminated [2]pseudorotaxane with terpyridine containing stoppers. The robust nature of the resulting [2]rotaxane ligand allows coordination to inert metals such as Ru(II) not possible under standard self-assembly conditions.

A modified dumbbell obtained by replacing one of the phenyl groups of the dibenzylammonium with a strong electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group templated the synthesis of the smallest [2]rotaxane reported so far.
